Car Dealer Website Costs: An Honest Breakdown

Most dealers find out what a website costs in a sales call, after they have already handed over their number. This page puts the numbers in the open: the three ways dealers pay, what drives the cost, and where Stock & Sold's £49 a month sits among them.

Lot 02 · The three models

The three ways dealers pay for a website.

None of these is a scam. They are different products for different budgets, and it pays to know which one you are being sold.

  1. Template or SaaS rental

A fixed monthly fee, usually £30 to £150+ a month. Quick to start, hosted and maintained for you, and you do not own the code. Some providers in this group will not show a price at all until you fill in a "request a quote" form.

  2. DMS-bundled

A website bundled into a bigger dealer management platform. Often the priciest route, and the cost rarely appears on a website because it is negotiated as part of the platform contract.

  3. Custom build

A one-off design and build fee, typically £3,000 to £10,000 plus hosting. You own the resulting code. Suits dealers who want something nobody else has, and who can budget to keep it maintained.

Stock & Sold sits squarely in the first category: a fixed-price monthly SaaS. The price is published on the homepage, it sits at the low end of that category's range, and it is aimed at independent dealers with 5 to 60 cars rather than larger groups. It is not a custom build, and it does not pretend to be one.

Lot 03 · The cost drivers

What actually drives the cost.

Whatever the model, these are the five things a provider is charging you for, one way or another.

  1. Feed and marketplace integrations

Plugging a website into Autotrader, Facebook Marketplace or a DMS takes real engineering time. The more connections, the higher the build cost, and often a monthly fee per feed on top.

  2. Finance and payment setup

A finance calculator, lender rates and card payment processing all need configuring with third parties. That setup work is billed somewhere, whether as a fee or a higher monthly price.

  3. Done for you, or self-service

A site you build yourself skips the labour cost but eats your evenings. A site built for you costs more per month, and launches with your stock already in it rather than a blank forecourt.

  4. Hosting, security and backups

Servers, SSL certificates and daily backups cost money to run well. Either they are wrapped into your monthly fee, or they land on your desk to sort out yourself.

  5. The support model

A ticket queue is cheap for a provider to run. A named person who answers the phone is not. Where the support sits is where cheap deals often come undone.

Lot 04 · Before you sign

Five questions worth asking.

Any provider should be able to answer each of these in one sentence. If they cannot, that is your answer.

01

Is there a setup fee?

Some providers charge a setup or activation fee on top of the monthly price. Ask for the total you will pay in month one, in writing.

02

What happens to my stock and photos if I leave?

Your stock list is your business record. Ask whether you can export it, in what format, and whether an exit fee applies.

03

How long is the minimum term?

Some providers tie you in for twelve months, some do not. Ask before the demo, not after. Ours is month to month.

04

Who owns the domain name?

The domain is your sign above the door. Register it in your own name, or confirm the provider will hand it over if you leave.

05

Is the price the price?

A "from £X a month" teaser usually means a stripped-down tier. Check what the configuration you actually need costs.

Lot 06 · The answers

Questions dealers ask about pricing.

Straight answers, no small print, no fluff.

Across the three common models: usually £30 to £150+ a month for a template or SaaS rental, a price that is rarely published and often the highest overall for a DMS-bundled site, and typically £3,000 to £10,000 plus hosting for a custom build. Stock & Sold is £49 a month.

No. There is no setup fee and nothing to pay up front. Your demo is built with your stock in it before you pay anything, and the £49 a month only starts from the day your site goes live.

It comes with you. Your stock list, prices and photos are yours throughout your subscription, and when you leave we hand them over in a plain export. The website code stays with us, because the site is a hosted service, but your business record is yours.

The published price is the price: £49 a month, no setup fee, no per-car charges and no undisclosed extras. The launch offer locks £39 a month for life for the first 15 dealers, on the condition that we can use their sites as case studies.

Yes. Send us your current listings link, whether that is Autotrader, Facebook or an existing site, and we load your stock into your demo before you pay anything. If you like it, your domain is pointed at the new site and you cancel the old service.
